First Impressions: PS3 Wireless Keypad

I’ve been keeping an eye on this new piece of hardware from the Leipzig Games Convention. Sony seems to have taken a page from the 360 book, but it’s a welcome one. The PS3 Wireless Keypad fits snugly over the top edge of a Dualshock 3 or Sixaxis controller and does not cover any shoulder buttons. Shifting the position of my hands to type on the pad seems like it would be a bit of a hassle, although most people wouldn’t be typing while simultaneously gunning down Chimeran foot soldiers anyway. I don’t know the weight yet, but I do know that Sony has taken careful consideration to balance the weight of the add-on.

You won’t have to worry about pairing this device via Bluetooth as that will be done automatically the first time you plug it in with a USB cable. Charging the unit is also done through USB, but it is unknown whether the controller and keypad will charge together while attached. I’m assuming they will, since the keypad uses the USB port on the controller. This unit will come standard with several unique and useful features. First off, it has shortcut keys, which will allow easy access to common features. You’ll be able to access your friends list and message inbox with the press of a button. Another unique feature that has been integrated into the same surface area that you’ll type with is a touch pad. Once you’ve pressed the touch pad mode button, you’ll be able to slide your finger around, useful for pointer movement and another feature yet to come.

Overall, I believe this is a ‘must get’ accessory for anyone that uses the PS3’s online features, like messaging and internet browsing. Home will also be supporting this device. I will definitely be picking one up this November, when they hit shelves. They will be retailing for $50usd and may or may not come in a bundle, as almost all official PS3 accessories do.
